No Talking in Class

Image
A talk and discussion about class in today's Aotearoa, and launch of the Freedom Shop's new pamphlet 'Class War in the 21st Century'. 6pm, Wednesday, August 23rd The Freedom Shop/Book Haven 160 Riddiford Street Newtown Whanganui-a-Tara Class was the issue that originally defined 'the left', but the left doesn't talk much about class these days, sometimes addressing class issues using euphemisms, sometimes avoiding it all together. Sam Buchanan, author of the new pamphlet, will talk about how class manifests itself today, and how domination of the left by the Professional-Managerial Class has led to class issues being ignored and other progress being hindered. Snacks and drinks. Grumpiness welcome. No throwing things.

Prisoners’ Justice Day - 10 August

Image
International Prisoners' Justice Day on 10 August is a reminder that we must end the violence of human caging and fight against the world that allows it to exist. When you look at who's in prison in countries around the world, it is so obvious that prisons have been and are tools of colonising empires and capitalism. Prisons are blatant examples of the criminalisation of the indigenous, of the poor, of people identified as 'other' and different by states the world over. In this country the reality of our history of colonisation is laid bare: Māori are vastly over-represented in prison statistics. It is in prisons that the racist and class nature of capitalism is clearly exposed. The fight to end prisons is a fight for a just world. At the Freedom Shop we have some books and zines about prison, including: Hell Is A Very Small Place: Voices From Solitary Confinement by Jean Casella Taking the Rap: Women Doing Time for Society's Crimes by Ann Hansen Hauling Up the Morn

bell hooks: 'disrupt the imperialist-white-supremacist-capitalist-patriarchy'

Image
Disrupt the “ imperialist-white-supremacist-capitalist-patriarchy ” power structure was what bell hooks said was needed, and that is what she did. She died this week but her words, her books, and her writings will continue to be part of the tools used to disrupt and dismantle. We need to keep reading and listening to those words, and discussing them - they are powerful. At the Freedom Shop we have two zines with bell hooks' writing: one is ' Understanding Patriarchy ' and the other is an anthology we created ourselves: " bell hooks - a sample of writings by bell hooks to entice... ' We put together the anthology several years ago to try and ensure more people become keen to sample bell hooks' writings. The zine includes three articles: ' Teaching to Transgress: Paulo Freire ', ' Killing Rage: Militant Resistance ' and ' Feminist Class Struggle '. Killing Rage opens with the wonderful sentence, ' I am writing this essay sitting besid

Winter Zine Market - 17 July

Image
Winter Zine Market returns in 2021! Once again, we're in the atrium at the Victoria University of Wellington, School of Design Innovation on Vivian Street. There's spots for 60 stallholders to sell zines about anything or anything. We'll open with an 'accessibility hour' from 11 til 12. This is a chance for anyone who, for whatever reason, can't attend when Zinefest is crowded. We'll have no music and try to maintain a low-stimulation environment. Then, from 12 til 4, we'll open to the public, and get cranking. This year, we're trying something new: asking stallholders to price all their zines at $5 or less. Make sure you bring cash and pick up some of the best self-published materials by very talented local creatives. Saturday 17 July. 11 - 12 quiet hour, 12 - 4 general. School of Design Innovation, 139 Vivian St, Te Aro Nothing of over $5! For more information see wellingtonzinefest.com

Surviving home detention - the great lockdown

Image
Obviously the Freedom Shop is closed now while we are in lockdown. For prisoners and people in home detention, being separated from friends and family and having your movements curtailed is quite normal.  While we can't sell you books right now, you can download e-books from our comrades at AK Press - they're having a sale at the moment. We're working on putting some of our zines and pamphlets online soon. See you on the barricades - but 2 metres apart please!
