We sell the 5ever 'Hot Men for Prison Abolition' fundraising notebooks at the Shop and we often get asked why people inside need paper and notebooks, so many assume paper is a basic necessity and everyone has access to it - but that's not necessarily true! So come along and kōrero with 5ever and find out more more about the campaign. You can also find out more about their September Notebooks for Prisoners Working Bee which is going to be held Rāhoroi Saturday 23rd September at Rebel Press.   The 5ever books community supports incarcerated people through their Notebooks for Prisoners campaign. They repurpose waste paper into blank notebooks with the help of friends. These notebooks are put together by volunteers, delivered free of charge, and then distributed ad hoc

International Prisoners' Justice Day on 10 August is a reminder that we must end the violence of human caging and fight against the world that allows it to exist. When you look at who's in prison in countries around the world, it is so obvious that prisons have been and are tools of colonising empires and capitalism. Prisons are blatant examples of the criminalisation of the indigenous, of the poor, of people identified as 'other' and different by states the world over. In this country the reality of our history of colonisation is laid bare: Māori are vastly over-represented in prison statistics. It is in prisons that the racist and class nature of capitalism is clearly exposed. The fight to end prisons is a fight for a just world. A launch event for three new zine titles, presented by The Freedom Shop in collaboration with Wellington Zinefest, PAPA and Counterfutures. On Thursday the 18th of November we will be launching THREE new zines in collaboration with Wellington Zinefest, People Against Prisons Aotearoa, Counterfutures and the How To Talk To Your Racist Uncle team.   The zines are: 'How To Talk To Your Racist Uncle' by Gaayathri Nair, illustrated by Lenny Zook.Check out their upcoming workshop on 27 November at the Aro Community Centre . 'Daring to Think of Something Better' -by People Against Prisons Aotearoa . 'Landlord Neutral 2030' by Counterfutures , illustrated by Pinky Fang.  The plan: Doors open at 5:30. On Tuesday evening, April 4th, Jake Conroy spoke at Tory St in Wellington. Jake describes himself as 'a scrawny white American vegan who got sentenced to time in a US prison'. About 40 people attended his talk 'From Activist to Terrorist'. He left us with three key messages: Think about prisons and prisoners, the lives people are forced to live there - the spaces they are forced to inhabit. One simple thing to do is write letters to people inside.  Don't be scared of the threat of state repression. Do fight-back. Figure out what you can do and find like-minded people and strategise how to bring about liberation. At the Freedom Shop we have a range of books written by people inside or those involved in prison abolition and penal politics, including: Abolitionist Demands: Toward the End of Prisons in Aotearoa by No Pride in Prison Outrage: An Anarchist Memoir of a Penal Colony  by Clément Duval Hauling Up the Morning: Writings and Art by political prisoners and pri
